Don’t mess with Jay-Z and/or any of his businesses!

Rap mogul Jay-Z has known how to perfectly combine his artistic side with his instinct for business. He has made it big on both areas. And of course, he will do whatever it takes to keep his business flourishing like always.

Beyonce’s husband had to sue Red Sox baseball player David Ortiz because he named one of his clubs located in Dominican Republic after one of Jay-Z’s most emblematic properties: the sports club 40/40. The hip-hop star has clubs in New York City, Atlantic City and Las Vegas, and also plans to open new venues in Tokio and Macao.

Ortiz named his club “Forty-Forty.’’ The lawsuit presented by Jay-Z and partner Juan Perez states that Ortiz has “traded on the fame, value and goodwill of their name through his club Forty/Forty and its website,, which has caused their business marketplace confusion and damage.”

The lawsuit -filed in Manhattan federal court- also says that “David Ortiz is fully aware of plaintiff’s Manhattan 40/40 Club, since he had been a patron there on several occasions long before he opened his infringing Forty/Forty Club.”
