Ashlyn Harris, the 38-year-old former footballer, expressed her admiration for her partner, actress Sophia Bush, after Bush came out as queer. Harris shared a photo of Bush on the cover of Glamour magazine on her Instagram story, along with the words “I’m so proud of you, baby.”
The image showed Bush using her hands to cover her bare chest, wearing only a brown leather jacket. The cover featured a quote from Bush’s essay for the magazine: “I feel like I can finally breathe.”
In her essay, the ‘One Tree Hill’ star revealed that she approached Harris while going through the painful process of her divorce from her ex-husband, Grant Hughes. Ashlyn Harris was also going through her own separation from her wife, Ali Krieger, at the time.
The shared experiences of divorce brought Bush and Harris closer together when they began attending the same support group. Bush wrote,
“I didn’t expect to find love in this supportive environment. I don’t know how else to put it other than: I didn’t see it until I saw it. And I think it’s very easy not to notice something that’s been in front of you for a long time when you’ve never considered it as an option, and you’ve never been considered as an option.”
Despite their deep love for each other, the situation turned “ugly” when allegations of infidelity surfaced, which Harris denied. Bush clarified that she did not end her marriage because she suddenly realized she wanted to be with women, as her partners had known her preferences for a long time.
Bush praised Ashlyn Harris’ “unrelenting integrity” and her dedication to her children – Sloane, 3, and Ocean, 1. She admired how Harris prioritizes and places her children at the center of her being. Bush expressed her gratitude for being able to love Harris, saying,
“Seeing Ashlyn not only choose to survive, but to thrive, for the sake of her children has been one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed in a friend. And now I get to love her. How lucky am I?”
