Remember that ‘Extras‘ episode where Ashley Jensen‘s character Maggie mistakes Samuel L. Jackson for Lawrence Fishburne in ‘Matrix‘? Well, something just like that happened in real life and it was just as awkward as you imagine it to be.
Reporter Sam Rubin made the huge mistake of misidentifying Jackson during an interview. Rubin mistook the ‘Django Unchained‘ actor for Lawrence Fishburne. He complimented Jackson for his Super Bowl commercial, which was followed by a very awkward pause and a visibly upset Jackson asking ‘What Superbowl commercial? You’re as crazy as the people on Twitter.’
Rubin was referring to the Official Kia K900 ad starring Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus.
Here’s Jackson’s response: “I’m not Laurence Fishburne! We don’t all look alike! We may be black and famous, but we don’t all look alike! You’re the entertainment reporter for this station, and you don’t know the difference between me and Laurence Fishburne? I’m the other guy, ‘what’s in your wallet,’ I’m that guy. There’s more than one black guy doing a commercial. I’m the ‘what’s in your wallet black guy, he’s the car commercial black guy, Morgan Freeman is the other credit card black guy. You only hear his voice though, so you probably won’t confuse him with Laurence Fishburne. And I’ve actually never done a McDonald’s or a Kentucky Fried Chicken commercial — I know that’s surprising.”
He was right to be mad. The reporter should have known better. It is his job to know exactly who he’s interviewing. That’s a basic rule. Also common sense.
Here’s the awkward video. And below we have a photo of Lawrence Fishburne. Samuel was right to point out he and Fishburne look nothing alike.
