Last year, when Rihanna failed to show up for her 2009 Grammy Award performance, reports had surfaced that there was an alleged altercation with her current boyfriend, singer Chris Brown. Brown was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats and assault, which was confirmed when leaked photographs obtained by TMZ revealed Rihanna to have sustained visible injuries. Rihanna’s private life has been made very public this past year, leading to an organization called STOParrazzi, which proposed a law called “Rihanna’s Law” which will keep employees of law enforcements from releasing photos and information that exploits crime victims.
Despite this year’s high media coverage of her assault, Rihanna stays optimistic and looks to the future. “The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. I want to give as much insight as I can to young women because I feel like I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women,” states Rihanna. The artist is known for her extensive charity work including the Believe Foundation and in supporting her home country in Barbados.
The singer also mentions her family and friends as her support group during this difficult time. Although people are helping her on the road to recovery, Rihanna states in her interview that “at some point you are there alone, it’s a lonely place to be—no one can understand. That’s when you get close to God.” Rihanna is well known for her belief in God, which can be seen as the subject of a few of her tattoos.
The young artist gracefully handled the leaked photo of her injuries by remaining silent on the issue, up until now. On the matter she states, “It was humiliating; that is not a photo you would show anybody. I felt completely taken advantage of. I felt like people were making it into a fun topic on the Internet and it’s my life. I was disappointed, especially when I found out the photo as leaked by two women.” When asked about starting a family, Rihanna told Glamour magazine, “I hope I find love in the next 10 years—that will be pretty annoying if I am 31 and still have never been in love!” Needless to say, the artist was not in love with Chris Brown.
Now that she’s back on her feet, Rihanna feels that she is at a turning point in her life. “I feel like I smile for real this time. The smiles come from inside and it exudes in everything I do. People feel my energy is different. When I smile they can tell it’s pure bliss and not just a cover up.”
