At the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday night, Jennifer Lawrence took to the stage to present the Vito Russo Award to country musician Orville Peck, but it was her own candid and comedic remarks on Mike Pence that stole the show.
The star, known for her roles in “The Hunger Games” and “Silver Linings Playbook,” delivered a speech that was both hilarious and controversial, touching on topics ranging from love to politics.
Lawrence began her speech by expressing her admiration for the LGBTQ+ community, revealing that her “first love” was a gay man whom she tried to “convert” for years. She then humorously acknowledged that her efforts were in vain, stating,
Jennifer Lawrence: ‘Did you hear me, Mike Pence?’
“But now I know conversion therapy doesn’t work. Did you hear me, Mike Pence?”
The actress didn’t shy away from taking a direct swipe at the former Vice President, who has been criticized for his stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Lawrence quipped, “Conversion therapy isn’t real. Even though you think it worked on you,” drawing laughter and applause from the audience.
But Jennifer Lawrence didn’t stop there. She went on to make a risqué joke about Pence, who was reportedly in New York receiving a Kids’ Choice Award. She said,
“You know he’s in New York tonight? He’s receiving a Kids’ Choice Award for weirdest d - - k,” eliciting gasps and laughter from the crowd.
Mike Pence, who has been married to his wife Karen since 1985, has faced criticism from LGBTQ+ activists for his support of conversion therapy and his opposition to gay marriage. In 2017, protesters gathered outside his residence for a “Queer Dance Party” to protest his policies.
Despite the controversial nature of her comments, Lawrence also spoke about her friendship with Peck, whom she met at a party. She joked about their shared love for reality TV, saying, “After swapping numbers and live texting during ‘Housewives,’ soon we took it to the next level.”
The GLAAD Media Awards, which honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ+ people and issues, also featured appearances by Jennifer Hudson, Uma Thurman, and Don Lemon.
Jennifer Lawrence’s speech, while humorous, sparked discussion on Mike Pence and debate, highlighting the ongoing importance of LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance.
