Taylor Swift showed her compassion and kindness by meeting with the family of Ana Clara Benevides Machado, a 23-year-old fan who tragically died at one of her concerts in Brazil.
Benevides Machado passed away on November 17 after suffering a cardiac arrest during Swift’s concert in Rio de Janeiro. The young woman was a victim of the extreme heat wave that hit the city that day.
Taylor Swift, who was heartbroken by the news, met with Benevides Machado’s family members before her concert in São Paulo on Sunday. The family wore T-shirts with a portrait of their beloved daughter and sister, while Swift hugged them and posed for photos in a glittery red leotard. The images were later shared on social media by the official Eras Tour X account.
Taylor Swift: “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am”
Taylor Swift had previously expressed her grief and condolences in an emotional message posted to her Instagram Story shortly after Benevides Machado’s death.
“I can’t believe I’m writing these words but it is with a shattered heart that I say we lost a fan earlier tonight before my show,” she wrote. “I can’t even tell you how devastated I am by this. There’s very little information I have other than the fact that she was so incredibly beautiful and far too young.”
“I’m not going to be able to speak about this from stage because I feel overwhelmed by grief when I even try to talk about it. I want to say now I feel this loss deeply and my broken heart goes out to her family and friends. This is the last thing I ever thought would happen when we decided to bring this tour to Brazil,” she continued.
Taylor Swift canceled her next show after the incident, and upon her return honored Benevides Machado with an emotional rendition of “Bigger Than the Whole Sky,” a song she wrote in memory of her fan.
“Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye / You were bigger than the whole sky / You were more than just a short time,” Swift sang as tears visibly rolled down her face. “I’m never gonna meet / What could’ve been, would’ve been / What should’ve been you / What could’ve been, would’ve been you.”
Swift’s gesture of meeting with Benevides Machado’s family and dedicating a song to her shows how much she cares about her fans and how deeply she was affected by the tragedy. Swift’s fans have praised her for being a genuine and empathetic person who always tries to make a positive difference in the world.
