A second Chinese influencer dies drinking after participating in an online challenge that involved live-streaming a binge-drinking session. The 27-year-old content creator, who went by the name of Zhong Yuan Huang Ge or Brother Huang online, succumbed to alcohol poisoning, according to his wife.
She told Jimu News, a Chinese media outlet, that her husband took up the challenge in a desperate attempt to pay off his debts before their marriage. He was from China’s Central Plains region.
The Strait Times reported that in one of his videos, Huang set fire to a piece of tissue paper soaked in alcohol, drank half a bottle of baijiu, a strong Chinese liquor, ate some scallions and finished the rest of the bottle. He then opened another bottle and continued drinking. His social media account has been banned since his death.
His death follows that of another influencer, Wang, who was known as Sanqiange or Brother Three Thousand online. Wang, a Chinese influencer dies drinking on May 16 after consuming four bottles of baijiu in a similar challenge. Huang and Wang were friends and Huang had attended Wang’s funeral a few weeks ago.
A study by Peking University researchers found that eight per cent of men are “problem drinkers”, mainly from rural and poor areas, as reported by South China Morning Post.
