Greek authorities confirmed on Sunday the discovery of the body of Michael Mosley, the esteemed British medical journalist and documentary maker who had been missing for four days on the Greek island of Symi.
Mosley’s body was located on a beach in Agia Marina, according to Symi’s mayor, Eleftherios Papakalodoukas. His disappearance had triggered a comprehensive search operation involving firefighters, police officers, volunteers, dogs, drones, and the Greek coast guard, who feared he might have been swept out to sea.
Mayor Papakalodas and reporters from the state news channel ERT made the tragic discovery as they were patrolling the coast together. He identified Mosley’s body by the distinctive blue shirt seen in the last CCTV images of him.
Mosley, 67, a BBC journalist, had arrived on Symi, part of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea, for a weeklong holiday. On Wednesday afternoon, he told friends at Agios Nikolaos beach that he would walk back to his accommodation in Symi town, a journey of about two miles. When he did not return, his wife, Clare Bailey Mosley, reported him missing.
The search initially focused on areas between Agios Nikolaos and Symi town. On Friday, efforts shifted north towards Agia Marina after security footage from Pedi, a village halfway along his intended route, appeared to show Mosley carrying an umbrella.
