Andre Braugher, the Emmy-winning actor who played Captain Raymond Holt in the comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, has died at the age of 61 after a brief illness, his publicist confirmed.
Braugher was known for his versatile roles as a police officer, both in drama and comedy, throughout his career. He won two Emmy Awards, one for his portrayal of detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, and another for his performance as the leader of a heist crew in Thief.
Andre Braugher’s co-stars and colleagues paid tribute to his talent and legacy on social media. Terry Crews, who played Terry Jeffords in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote on Instagram: “I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship. You showed me what a life well lived looks like.”
David Simon, who created Homicide: Life on the Street based on his non-fiction book, said on Twitter: “I’ve worked with a lot of wonderful actors. I’ll never work with one better. Andre Braugher’s death is too damn soon.”
Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher’s on-screen husband in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, shared a picture of the pair hugging while on set, wearing their wedding rings. He captioned the post on X: “O Captain. My Captain.”

Braugher was born in Chicago and graduated from Stanford University before attending The Juilliard School for drama. He was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards in total, including four for his role as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which ended its eight-season run in September.
Braugher also earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Dr Ben Gideon in Gideon’s Crossing, and starred in Men Of A Certain Age, Tuskegee Airmen and The Residence, among other shows.
He also received critical acclaim for his role as a soldier in the 1989 film Glory, which also starred Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman and Matthew Broderick. His other film credits include Primal Fear, Salt, City of Angels and She Said, where he played the New York Times executive editor who oversaw the investigation of Harvey Weinstein.
He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, who he met on the set of Homicide, and his three sons.
Andre Braugher’s death has left a void in the entertainment industry, as he was widely respected and admired for his range and depth as an actor. He brought life and humor to his characters, and inspired many with his passion and professionalism. He will be remembered as one of the finest actors of his generation, and a beloved friend and colleague to many.
