The 2024 Tony Awards dazzled New York City on Sunday, June 16th, celebrating the best of the 2023-2024 Broadway season. Ariana DeBose, back for her third year as host, kept the energy high as awards were handed out at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater.
Outsiders Takes Top Prize
The night’s biggest winner was “The Outsiders,” a new musical based on the cult classic film. With Angelina Jolie among its producers, the show took home the coveted Best Musical award.
Two Broadway veterans finally received their first Tony Awards for acting. Jonathan Groff triumphed for his role in the Stephen Sondheim revival “Merrily We Roll Along,” while Daniel Radcliffe won for his performance in the same production.
Lifetime Achievement and LGBTQ+ Advocacy Recognized
Theatre titans Jack O’Brien and George C. Wolfe were honored with the 2024 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. Billy Porter, known for his powerful performances and LGBTQ+ activism, received the 2024 Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award for his ongoing dedication to the community.
