Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential famous Americans and  the leader of the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s. King fought the racial segregation and injustice through peaceful demonstration and through his eloquent speeches. His leadership that saw off events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, 1963 changed the course of history.

The activism led by King contributed to the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which remain the landmark legislation in the history of the US, In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and he continues to be a figurehead of a nonviolent rebellion that people outline across the world.

Abraham Lincoln is another name that would make any list of famous Americans. the 16th president of the United States, led the country in the Civil War and is best remembered as abolishing slavery. He made the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 that was given to free the slaves that were held in the territory of the Confederates. He was later a leader who brought the 13 th Amendment, which abolished slavery in the whole country.

Lincoln held the Union together and encouraged liberty and democracy when the nation could have been divided forever. Two of his addresses, the Gettysburg Address and Second Inaugural Address are regarded as landmark addresses in the rhetorics of U.S political discourse.

FDR spearheaded the Allied campaign against Nazism Germany and Imperial Japan during WWII paving the way to international democracy and post-war reconstruction.
