Despite her parents’ success in Hollywood, Michelle and Barack Obama did not attend the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this month, where Malia made her red carpet debut at the premiere of “The Heart.”
Janine Nabers, co-creator of Swarm, praised Malia’s professionalism and talent in a January 2023 Vanity Fair interview, describing her as “an incredible writer and artist.”
Donald, another industry insider, also commended Malia’s work, emphasizing that her famous parents did not influence how she was treated on set. “I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon,” he told Vanity Fair in March 2022. “Her writing style is great. We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] President’s daughter.”
Malia Obama herself has described “The Heart” as “an odd little story, somewhat of a fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will,” as she explained in her Sundance spotlight.
Malia Obama’s decision to use a stage name to distance herself from her family is not unprecedented in Hollywood. Actors like Nicolas Cage, who changed his last name from Coppola, and Angelina Jolie, who dropped her surname, Voight, have also chosen to separate their professional identities from their famous relatives.
