Grammy winner Lizzo has taken to Instagram to express her frustration and exhaustion, hinting at a possible departure from the music industry.
In her post on Friday night, she lamented feeling dragged down by criticism and falsehoods, stating, “All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I’m starting to feel like the world doesn’t want me in it.”
She concluded, “I didn’t sign up for this s–t — I QUIT.”
The singer’s statement comes in the midst of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her by former backup dancers Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez. The lawsuit, filed in August 2023, accuses Lizzo of creating a toxic work environment and engaging in sexual harassment. Allegations include incidents in Amsterdam’s Red Light District where Lizzo allegedly encouraged cast members to engage in inappropriate activities.
The Storm Surrounding Lizzo’s Career
Lizzo’s post also followed criticism from her former backup dancers’ attorney, Ron Zambrano, regarding her performance at a re-election fundraiser for President Biden. Zambrano called her participation “shameful” given the ongoing lawsuit.
Despite the allegations and public scrutiny, Lizzo has maintained her innocence, calling the accusations “outrageous” in a statement shared on social media in August 2023. She has also threatened to countersue.
While the accusations against Lizzo are serious, she has received support from some of her employees, with eighteen of them signing declarations disputing the harassment claims in October 2023. These employees have praised Lizzo for her professionalism and kindness, contradicting the image portrayed in the lawsuit.
However, the controversy surrounding Lizzo has not subsided. In September 2023, Asha Daniels, who previously worked in the wardrobe department for the singer’s 2023 tour, filed a lawsuit accusing her of turning a blind eye to a verbally and physically abusive manager. Lizzo has not publicly commented on these allegations.
Despite the legal challenges and negative publicity, Lizzo appeared in good spirits while presenting at the 2024 Grammys. Her appearance at the prestigious event suggests that she is not letting the controversies affect her professional commitments.
The future of Lizzo’s music career remains uncertain, with fans and industry observers wondering if she will indeed step away from the spotlight.
