‘Steve Carell has acknowledged the news of the upcoming spinoff of “The Office” heading to Peacock, but fans shouldn’t hold out hope for his return as the beloved character Michael Scott.
During an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” Carell was asked about the possibility of appearing on the show, to which he responded with a simple, “I doubt it.”
Later that evening, during a red carpet interview for the animated children’s movie “IF,” Steve Carell elaborated on his stance.
Steve Carell: ‘I will be watching the Office Spinoff”
“I will be watching but I will not be showing up,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character [Michael Scott] to show up in something like that. But I’m excited about it. It sounds like a great conceit.”
The spinoff will feature an entirely new cast and will not be set at Dunder Mifflin, the fictional paper company in Scranton, Penn., that served as the backdrop for the original series.
Instead, the new show will be connected to “The Office” universe through the documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin employees over the course of nine seasons. This time, the crew will focus on a dying Midwestern newspaper and its publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.
Irish actor Domhnall Gleeson, known for his roles in “Star Wars” and “Harry Potter,” will star alongside Sabrina Impacciatore (“The White Lotus”). Filming for the spinoff is set to begin in July and will be helmed by “The Office” creator Greg Daniels and “Nathan For You” creator Michael Koman.
Steve Carell expressed his excitement for the new series, particularly praising Gleeson.
“I love the idea — I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads,” Steve Carell said. “I did ‘The Patient’ with him, and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy, so I think it’ll be great.”
