Britney Spears, the 41-year-old pop icon, has no mercy for her mom, Lynne Spears, in her new memoir, The Woman in Me. A source told Us Weekly that Britney was furious with Lynne for writing a book about her in 2008, called Through the Storm. The book detailed Lynne’s perspective on Britney’s 2007 breakdown, which led to her being placed under a conservatorship for 13 years. Britney felt that Lynne was exploiting her name and fame by writing the book, and that the timing was “unf–kingbelievable.”
Britney wrote in The Woman in Me that she was hurt and angry that her mother was making money from sharing “the darkest times” in her life. She also said that Lynne’s book made her doubt herself and wonder if she was really as “bad” as her mother portrayed her.
Britney Spears: “It was pure abuse”
“A woman introduced the idea [of the conservatorship] to my dad, and my mom actually helped him follow through and made it all happen,” Britney alleged in a since-deleted August 2022 video shared via YouTube. “It was all basically set up. There were no drugs in my system. No alcohol. No nothing. It was pure abuse.”
Britney also accused Lynne of being complicit in the conservatorship scheme, which gave Britney’s dad, Jamie Spears, control over her life and money. Britney said that Lynne helped Jamie set up the conservatorship, and that it was “pure abuse.” Britney said that she felt betrayed by her mother and sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, who did nothing to help her get out of the legal trap. She said that they seemed to enjoy seeing her as “the bad one” and “messed up.”
“The whole thing that made it really confusing for me is [the #FreeBritney movement] are on the street fighting for me, but my sister [Jamie Lynn Spears] and my mother aren’t doing anything,” Britney said in the video. “To me, it was like they secretly honestly liked me being the bad one — like I was messed up, and they kind of just liked it that way. Otherwise, why weren’t they outside my doorstep, saying, ‘Baby girl, get in the car. Let’s go.’ I think that’s the main thing that hurt me. I couldn’t process how my family went along with it for so long. Their only response was, ‘We didn’t know.”
The Woman in Me will be released on Tuesday, October 24.
