Angelina Jolie is one of the most famous and acclaimed actresses in Hollywood. She is also known for her humanitarian work, her directorial projects, and her family life. However, in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine, Jolie revealed that she probably would not become an actor if she was just starting out in the industry in 2023. She said that she would prefer to act on the stage, rather than in Hollywood, where she feels too much pressure to be public and share everything.
“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” Jolie said. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Angelina Jolie has been under intense public scrutiny for well over two decades, especially after she divorced Brad Pitt seven years ago. The stress of the divorce and the media attention affected her health and well-being, to the point that she noticed that her voice had changed registers while filming the Disney sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in 2018.
Angelina Jolie: “I had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce”
“My body reacts very strongly to stress,” Jolie said. “My blood sugar goes up and down. I suddenly had Bell’s palsy six months before my divorce.”
Angelina Jolie said that she doesn’t have much of a social life in Los Angeles, where she lives with her six children, because of the unwanted attention she gets whenever she steps outside. She also said that she doesn’t pay attention to what’s being written about her in the press, because she has heard it all before.
“I’ve just been around so long and there’s been everything said,” she said.
Angelina Jolie also said that she plans to leave Los Angeles for good and spend more time at her home in Cambodia, where she feels more authentic and free. She said that moving away from Hollywood was part of what happened after her divorce, which also made her do less film work.
“It’s part of what happened after my divorce. I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can,” Jolie said. “I grew up in quite a shallow place. Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”
Jolie told Vogue magazine in September that she started doing less film work “seven years ago, only taking jobs that didn’t require long shoots.” She said that she and her children had “a lot of healing to do” and that they were “still finding our footing.”
The Oscar winner did not go into specifics, but her film hiatus coincides with the end of her marriage to Pitt, whom she filed for divorce from in September 2016 after an alleged physical altercation with him on a plane.
Jolie said that she feels a “bit down these days,” and that she doesn’t feel like herself for a decade. “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way. Which I don’t want to get into,” she said.
Angelina Jolie has only had two lead roles in the eight years since she starred in “Maleficent” in 2014 and directed and co-starred with Pitt in the 2015 flop “By the Sea.” She appeared in “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” in 2019 and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” in 2021. She also had supporting roles in “Eternals” (2021) and “Come Away” (2020) and voiced characters in “The One and Only Ivan” (2020) and the upcoming “Kung Fu Panda 4.” She recently wrapped production on “Maria,” in which she plays the opera singer Maria Callas.
Angelina Jolie is a role model and a leader, who has shown her courage and wisdom in facing the challenges and opportunities in her journey. She is truly a Hollywood icon, and a legend in her own right.
