Beloved “Friends” actor Matthew Perry’s death has taken a dramatic turn as an investigation is underway into how the actor ended up with substantial amounts of the anesthetic ketamine in his system—a drug that was determined to have had a role in his sudden passing.
The Startling Discovery in Matthew Perry’s Death
Capt. Scot Williams of the Los Angeles Police Department recently revealed via email that the department is working with the Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to determine the cause of Perry’s high ketamine levels at the time of his death in October. The terrible incident has become more complicated in light of this news, which was first made public by TMZ.
The 54-year-old Perry was found unconscious in his Los Angeles home’s hot tub. The results of his autopsy, which was published in December, showed that the blood ketamine level was within the normal range used to provide general anesthesia for surgical procedures. Notably, ketamine is also occasionally recommended to treat depression, emphasizing its dual function as a necessary medical intervention as well as a possible risk.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s autopsy report shed further light on the circumstances surrounding Perry’s death. It was concluded that while Perry had drowned in “the heated end of his pool,” this was a secondary factor. The primary concern was the unusual levels of ketamine found in his system.
Friends and family of the actor informed investigators that Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy, an experimental treatment for depression and anxiety. However, the timing of his last treatment—over a week prior to his death—didn’t align with the high levels of the drug found in his blood, as ketamine is generally metabolized within hours.
