Machine Gun Kelly has shocked fans by covering nearly his entire upper body and arms in black ink, effectively concealing years of tattoo artwork in one dramatic change.
The musician, whose real name is Colson Baker, unveiled his new look on Tuesday, February 20, through an Instagram post. The photos reveal the black ink now covering his neckline, arms, and mid-torso, with a crucifix pattern appearing where previous tattoos were, now obscured by the bold black ink. The vertical part of the cross extends down to his waistline.
In the caption, the 33-year-old singer explained the change as “for spiritual purposes only,” and expressed gratitude to his tattoo artist, Roxx, who also shared several images of the new ink on her Instagram, describing the collaboration as “making art” with Machine Gun Kelly and praising his toughness.
Divided Opinions on Machine Gun Kelly’s Tattoo Cover-Up
However, the response from fans was mixed, with many expressing surprise and criticism over the decision. Some labeled it as “the stupidest thing,” while others compared it to leaving a child with a black marker. Many questioned why Machine Gun Kelly would cover up so many of his noted tattoos, including the colorful sleeves on his arms and work on his chest and torso.
Machine Gun Kelly, originally from Houston, Texas, has been adding to his tattoo collection since the age of 14 and had accumulated over 90 tattoos by 2023. He has previously covered old tattoos with new designs as his tastes evolved.
In a 2010 interview, he shared his view that tattoos are a lifestyle, not a fashion trend, and discussed some of his favorite tattoos at the time, including one on his lower stomach that reads “Almost Famous,” symbolizing his journey in the music industry, and quotes from the movie “The Sandlot” and symbolic chain links on his wrists.
