Marvel Studios has cut ties with actor Jonathan Majors, who played the villainous Kang the Conqueror in several MCU projects, following his conviction for misdemeanor assault and harassment.
A Marvel representative confirmed to Deadline on Dec. 18 that the studio is not moving forward with Majors, who starred in 2023’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the Disney+ series Loki. He was also expected to reprise his role in the upcoming Avengers movies in 2026 and 2027.
The incident and the verdict
The decision came after a jury found Majors guilty of two counts of domestic violence against his former girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, in a New York court. He was acquitted of two other charges of assault and aggravated harassment.
The incident occurred in March 2023, when Majors and Jabbari were riding in a town car and Majors allegedly received a text message from another woman that said, “Wish I was kissing you right now.” Jabbari tried to snatch his phone, but Majors reportedly pulled her finger, twisted her arm and hit her face. He then threw her back into the car, according to prosecutors.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call from Jabbari’s apartment and arrested Majors without incident. Jabbari suffered minor injuries to her head and neck and was taken to a hospital.
Majors’ lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, said in a statement that Majors is innocent and grateful for the support of his family, friends and fans. He also said he hopes to clear his name in the future.
Majors, who rose to fame with his roles in The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Lovecraft Country, was one of the most anticipated additions to the Marvel CU. He made his debut as Kang the Conqueror, a time-traveling warlord, in the season finale of Loki, and was set to be the main antagonist of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is scheduled for release in February 2024.
Majors’ future and impact on Marvel
He was also rumored to appear in the next two Avengers films, which would feature a massive crossover of heroes and villains from different timelines and realities. According to some sources, Majors had signed a multi-picture deal with Marvel and was poised to become one of the biggest threats in the franchise.
Marvel has not shared who may replace Majors in the role. However, some fans have speculated that the studio could cast another actor to play a different version of Kang, since the character has multiple variants and aliases in the comics. Some of the names that have been suggested by fans include John Boyega, Riz Ahmed, and Daniel Kaluuya.
The news of Majors’ departure from Marvel has sparked mixed reactions from the public.
